Anvil disenchanting
Anvil disenchanting is a server rule that lets you use an anvil process to remove enchantments from items. Instead of living with a bad roll, you can take something like a Sharpness sword that also picked up Knockback, run it through the anvil, and get back either a cleaned item, an enchanted book, or a partial extraction, depending on the server’s rules.
In play, it makes loot feel usable more often. Bastions, end cities, mob drops, and villager trades produce a lot of almost-right gear. With anvil disenchanting, those pieces become inputs you can refine before a fight or a raid, rather than junk you toss because one line is wrong.
It also changes progression and trading because enchantments stop being purely locked to the item they spawned on. If books can be recovered, mid-tier gear becomes a source of stock for shops, and XP becomes a real currency for recycling. The balance usually lives in the costs and limits: whether you can target a specific enchant, how harsh the level price is, what happens to durability and prior work penalties, and whether curses are fair game.
The best versions keep the choice meaningful and predictable. You should be able to tell before confirming whether the item is consumed, whether you get a guaranteed book, and how the anvil math will affect future upgrades. That clarity keeps disenchanting from feeling like a loophole while still cutting down on dead-end items.
What do you usually get back from anvil disenchanting?
Most servers do one of three things: move enchantments onto a book, remove a chosen enchantment, or wipe the item clean. It’s commonly priced in XP levels and may also add side effects like item damage, higher prior work penalty, or restrictions on which enchantments can be extracted.
Can it remove Curse of Binding or Curse of Vanishing?
Often yes, but curse removal is frequently the most restricted part. Some servers allow it with a steep cost, others only allow certain curses, and some keep curses permanent. If the system does not let you target a specific enchantment, curse removal may be unreliable or impossible.
How does this affect villager trading and XP farms?
It usually shifts the meta rather than replacing it. Villagers still provide consistent starting enchantments, but random gear becomes more valuable because you can refine it. XP generation stays important because disenchanting is commonly level-gated, and players with steady XP can iterate on gear faster.
Is this just a grindstone with a different name?
No. A grindstone removes most enchantments but does not recover them as books in vanilla and cannot remove curses. Anvil disenchanting implies an anvil-based process with server-defined outcomes, often with more control and some form of salvage.
What should I check before disenchanting something valuable?
Verify whether the item can be destroyed, whether it pulls all enchantments or only one, and whether failure is possible. Also check how it interacts with prior work penalty, since repeated anvil operations can make later combining and repairing prohibitively expensive.
