Close to vanilla servers play like a normal Survival world with the rough edges sanded down for multiplayer. The loop is unchanged: mine, build, explore, trade, fight, and progress at vanilla speed. You can join with zero relearning and still feel the same stakes around gear, distance, and resources.
Changes are meant to protect the world and reduce friction, not rewrite progression. Expect moderation tools, anti-cheat, basic claim protection, and small quality-of-life like one-player sleep. Convenience commands, if present, are usually limited and do not replace travel, gathering, or building real infrastructure.
What defines a good close to vanilla server is restraint. Redstone, farms, villager trading, and Nether travel are kept behaving the way experienced players expect, with only targeted limits to keep the server stable. The result is long-term survival that stays familiar instead of drifting into kits, custom items, or economy-first gameplay.
Vanilla mechanics and progression stay central, but the server may add just enough plugins to handle multiplayer realities: protection, moderation, and stability. If the changes start handing out resources or skipping travel and risk, it is no longer close to vanilla.
No. Pure vanilla is typically no plugins and fewer safeguards. Close to vanilla aims for the same feel while adding the minimum needed to keep a public world playable.
Sometimes, but usually in a limited form. Many servers allow /spawn and little else, so Nether routes, horses, boats, and elytra still matter.
Often yes. The expectation is that standard redstone and farm designs work, with only selective caps on extreme lag sources rather than broad mechanic nerfs.
Some do. A common approach is keeping a persistent main world while refreshing a resource or mining world to prevent the overworld from being stripped, without changing how survival progression works.
