Combat logging punished means disconnecting does not get you out of a fight. After you hit someone, get hit, or otherwise get flagged for PvP, you are considered in combat for a short timer. Logging out during that window is treated as an outcome, not a pause.
The feel is simple: commits matter. Picking a fight outside spawn is choosing to play it through, and chasing stays relevant because the other player cannot erase the last moments by leaving the server. Wins and losses come from movement, cover, healing, and aim, not the disconnect button.
Punishments vary, but the intent stays consistent: keep PvP honest. Some servers kill you on logout, drop your inventory, or leave a logout NPC behind that can be finished. Others use forfeits, fines, temp bans, or escalating penalties for repeat offenders. Either way, the rule shifts risk back into the world and makes survival decisions sharper.
What usually counts as being in combat?
Player-caused damage is the standard trigger: melee, arrows, splash, crystals, and similar. Many servers also include player-applied burn, poison, or other effects, and some flag you for being targeted even if the shot misses. Most setups show a timer or status message so you know when you are tagged.
What if I crash or disconnect accidentally?
Assume the server will treat it the same as logging out. Some communities reduce the sting with a logout NPC, a short grace window, or staff help for obvious crashes, but you should play like any disconnect can cost your kit.
Is it only for open-world PvP?
No. In duels or arenas it often becomes an auto-forfeit with rating loss. In survival, factions, or hardcore-style worlds it is more likely to mean death, item drop, or a server-side penalty timer.
How do I leave safely if I need to go?
Do not log out while the combat timer is running. Break line of sight, make distance, and wait it out somewhere sealed or hidden. If commands like /home or /spawn get blocked in combat, plan your exits before you take or start a fight.
