A Heart Ban System is a Hardcore-adjacent multiplayer ruleset where your max health is a life counter. Each death cuts your maximum hearts, and hitting zero means you are banned for a set time or permanently. It turns dying from a setback into lasting damage you carry into every future fight.
The core loop is survival with compounding risk: progress, gear up, and protect your health total. Early scrambles for iron, villages, and Nether access get tense because one bad death does not just drop your items, it makes you permanently easier to finish off. Routine play changes too: caving gets slower, elytra travel gets conservative, and Nether trips become planned runs with exits.
Many servers add a way to regain hearts through crafting, rare drops, quests, or trading. That makes hearts a real resource, not just a punishment. Players hoard them, sell them, steal them, and target rivals who are visibly low, while teams prioritize keeping their strongest players topped up.
PvP becomes attrition-focused. The win is not only taking gear, it is forcing deaths and shrinking a player or group over time. Good players lean into scouting, traps, and cleanups because a single death swing changes future matchups. The overall feel sits between survival SMP and hardcore: long-term worlds, but with constant pressure because everyone knows a few mistakes can remove you from the server.
Typically a temp-ban with a cooldown (hours to days) or a permanent ban until the next reset. Some servers offer a revive item or teammate ritual, but it is usually costly and tightly limited.
Most setups count every death: mobs, lava, void, fall damage, and PvP. Some servers exempt obvious edge cases (spawn kills, glitches) or apply special rules to PvP, but the format relies on any death reducing max health.
If recovery exists, it is commonly a craftable heart item gated behind late-game materials, boss drops, quests, or an economy. Well-run servers keep it slow enough that dying still matters and you cannot casually reset your mistakes.
Avoid trades and fair fights. Secure your base, move valuables, skip risky Nether trips without fire resistance, and carry an escape plan (pearls, blocks, water, totems if enabled). Play for information and positioning, and only commit when you can finish without dying.
Related, but not identical. Lifesteal usually means killing a player transfers a heart to you. A Heart Ban System is defined by max hearts shrinking on death and a ban at zero, whether or not heart stealing is part of PvP.
