mostly no rules

Mostly no rules sits just short of full anarchy. The point is that normal survival restraints are gone: PvP is usually open, griefing and theft are part of the deal, and staff rarely step in to restore losses. Your security comes from OP claims, rollback tools, or spawn protection less often, and more from what you hide, what you know, and who you trust.

Play revolves around risk management under constant social pressure. You travel light, stash backups, and treat good gear as temporary. Bases trend small, off-path, and redundant: buried shulkers, decoy rooms, Nether tunnels, and multiple exits. Alliances form for convenience, then break when someone finds leverage, coords, or an easy score.

When rules exist, they are usually about keeping the server running, not keeping you safe. Expect hard lines around crashing the server, lag machines, and out-of-game abuse. Some hosts also draw a line at hacked clients, but enforcement varies. If you want survival where reputation and paranoia matter as much as enchantments, mostly no rules is the format.

Does mostly no rules mean griefing and stealing are allowed?

On most servers in this format, yes. You should assume anything you build can be found, raided, or destroyed, and that staff will not roll it back. The usual exceptions are actions that threaten server stability or cross into out-of-game harm.

What rules still get enforced on these servers?

Typically the non-negotiables: no crashing or intentionally lagging the server, no doxxing, and limits on extreme chat behavior depending on the host. Everything else tends to be handled by players, for better or worse.

What is the best way to survive long-term?

Stop thinking in terms of one base and one set of gear. Keep multiple stashes, spread valuables, use the Nether to move, and avoid tying your main storage to obvious travel lines. Information matters more than armor: protect your coords and be careful who you let near your builds.

How is this different from anarchy?

Anarchy usually implies close to zero moderation. Mostly no rules often still has a short list of enforced lines, especially around server stability and out-of-game abuse. The day-to-day gameplay feels similar, but the ceiling on what gets punished is a bit lower.

Is it worth joining as a new player?

Yes, if you can handle losing progress. The early goal is simple: get away from common routes, secure food and tools, and establish a hidden stash before you start building anything you would miss. Most players die because they announce themselves through obvious bases, public chat, or predictable travel.
