Nether ratio
Nether ratio is the conversion between Nether distance and Overworld distance. Vanilla is 1:8, so moving 100 blocks in the Nether effectively moves you 800 blocks in the Overworld. That single rule is why Nether highways matter and why getting obsidian early can reshape an entire server.
With the vanilla 1:8 Nether ratio, the world feels big but not far. Once a portal and a basic tunnel exist, travel stops being a serious cost. People can live thousands of blocks out for space or resources and still show up for trades, group projects, or spawn events. The flip side is that scouting, raiding, and third-party PvP also get easier because distance is no longer protection.
When servers change the Nether ratio, they are usually tuning how much weight distance should have. A reduced ratio like 1:4 or 1:2 makes the Nether less of a teleport network, so regions stay more distinct and random drop-ins happen less. A higher ratio compresses the map harder, which can be great for busy hubs and fast commerce, but it also concentrates conflict and makes it tougher to stay truly remote.
The ratio also shows up in portal linking and shared infrastructure. The more aggressive the conversion, the more a small coordinate mismatch turns into a big Overworld offset, so organized servers standardize portal coords, build marked hub corridors, and avoid placing portals too close to existing links. If you care about clean logistics, a clearly stated Nether ratio is a real signal of how the server expects travel to work.
