Ship skins

Ship skins are servers where your boat or custom ship can be given a different look without changing how it handles. Instead of every crew sailing the same generic hull, you show up with a black-painted brig, faction colors on the sails, themed trim, or a signature design that matches your gear and base. It is usually cosmetic, but it changes the vibe fast: ports look lived-in, fleets are visually readable, and you often know who is coming before the first cannon shot or boarding hook lands.

The loop is straightforward: unlock skins through play (quests, ranks, events, progression tracks, crates) or sometimes a shop, then apply them at a shipyard menu, a shipwright NPC, or a command GUI with a preview. Many servers split skins by ship class, so a sloop and a galleon do not share the same library. The good implementations keep it clean: swapping happens at docks or safe harbors, previews are obvious, and your look persists through repairs, upgrades, and restarts.

Where ship skins really matter is multiplayer culture and callouts. In naval PvP, a distinctive skin becomes shorthand in voice chat and text: you are not fighting a random ship, you are fighting that crew. In faction and roleplay scenes, matching sails and hull patterns work like uniforms for a fleet. Even on trading and exploration servers, skins make harbors feel like places people invest in, and players tend to protect a ship more when it looks like something they earned.
