Shopkeeper trading is an economy style where players set up a persistent shopkeeper (often a villager-style NPC), load it with stock, and set buy and sell prices. Other players trade through that NPC any time, so commerce keeps moving without the owner online. It replaces chat hawking and menu-only markets with physical storefronts you can actually walk to.
The loop is straightforward: gather or produce goods, keep the shop stocked, price it to move, then reinvest. Early sales are usually basics like logs, food, iron, and common mob drops. As the server settles, it shifts toward convenience and power: rockets, potions, enchanted books, shulker boxes, bulk building blocks, and whatever is annoying to farm at scale.
It feels like a player-built marketplace with consequences. Foot traffic and placement matter, empty shelves lose trust, and bad pricing gets undercut fast. The good shops are the ones that stay consistent: clear stock, fair rates, and reliable supply. The rhythm becomes part of survival itself: restock, scout competing stalls, adjust, repeat.
Trades happen through a persistent NPC interface, not a sign, command, or timed listing. It stays grounded in-world: you visit locations, compare nearby prices, and buy instantly instead of shopping through a global menu.
Usually not. Once the shopkeeper is set up with stock and prices, other players can trade with it while you are offline.
Consistency and convenience. Stock that stays filled, prices that match the local market, and a location people already pass through. A smaller shop in a busy hub often beats a bigger shop hidden in the outskirts.
Through comparison and scarcity. Hubs make it easy to check alternatives, so overpriced items sit. Rare or time-consuming items hold higher rates until someone else can supply them reliably.
Most servers pair shopkeepers with claims or regions so the shop and its containers cannot be broken or looted. Competition is meant to happen through supply and pricing, not sabotage.
