Toggleable phantoms

Toggleable phantoms means phantom spawning can be enabled or disabled, most often per-player and sometimes by world or region. In vanilla, staying awake long enough triggers phantom waves; here, insomnia stops being a hard punishment and becomes a personal choice.

The night loop feels different. Builders, miners, and long-distance travelers can ignore beds without being forced into aerial fights, while players who like the extra pressure can keep phantoms on. You still deal with normal survival threats like mobs, hunger, and fall damage, but you are not constantly paying a tax for choosing to work through the night.

Because phantoms are the main source of membranes, servers usually provide a fallback when phantoms are off: trades, loot, shops, or a controlled way to farm them. The pacing shift is the point: you sleep for morning, spawn setting, or coordination, not because a timer is about to send fliers at your head.

Is it per-player or a global switch?

Most servers make it per-player so one person's sleep habits do not decide phantom spawns for everyone. Some run it globally for simplicity, and others split it by world (for example, off in the main build world, on in a resource or hard-mode world).

How do players toggle phantoms?

Usually through a command or a simple settings menu. Better setups let you change it anytime so you can enable phantoms when you want membranes and disable them when you are building or traveling.

Does this change sleeping or night-skip rules?

Typically no. You can still sleep to set your spawn, and whatever sleep system the server uses (single-player sleep or percentage sleep) works the same. The change is that staying awake is not automatically tied to phantom attacks.

What happens to phantom membranes if phantoms are disabled?

Many servers add another source, like wandering trader trades, custom loot, or an economy option. If they do not, slow falling potions and membrane access become noticeably rarer, so it is worth checking before you rely on them.
