Vote sleep

Vote sleep is a multiplayer survival setup where night skipping happens through a server-wide vote instead of requiring everyone to be in a bed. A player triggers a sleep request, the server prompts everyone to respond, and time advances once the vote meets a set threshold. Because the requirement is usually a percentage of online players, the world can move to morning without waiting on someone who is AFK, mid-flight, or busy in another dimension.

The practical effect is smoother pacing without deleting the challenge of night. If people want daylight for building, travel, or early-game safety, a vote can carry and the server keeps moving. If others are actively using the night for combat, raids, or mob spawning, they can vote it down and keep the danger. That shared decision keeps the world feeling communal, but avoids the vanilla problem where one unreachable player blocks sleep for everyone.

It is most noticeable on casual SMPs with fluctuating player counts and scattered locations. Good implementations keep it quick and readable in chat so it feels like a moment of coordination, not constant noise.

How many players need to vote for sleep to pass?

Usually a set percentage of online players, commonly around a simple majority up to roughly two-thirds. Many servers also try to handle edge cases like AFK players so one idle account does not skew the vote.

Does vote sleep prevent phantoms?

Only if you actually skip nights often. Phantoms are tracked per player based on time since last sleep, so a player who never participates can still get targeted even if the server frequently votes to morning.

Can the overworld skip night if some players are in the Nether or the End?

On many vote sleep servers, yes. The point is to stop cross-dimension play from locking the overworld into night. Some servers restrict this, but the common expectation is that the vote can still pass.

Will vote sleep interfere with mob farms or night-based gameplay?

It can, because nights may end early when the server chooses to sleep. Servers that care about farming typically rely on higher thresholds, cooldowns, or simple etiquette so players do not force sleep while others are using hostile spawns.

Is vote sleep the same as one-player sleep?

No. One-player sleep advances time as soon as a single person sleeps. Vote sleep keeps time changes as a group decision, which reduces the feeling that one player can constantly reset the server’s rhythm.
