Xray protection
Xray protection is the server-side setup that keeps ore hunting honest. It blocks the main edge of xray packs and hacked clients by not showing valuable blocks until you actually expose them by mining, so diamonds stay something you earn instead of something a cheater farms in a straight line.
With real xray protection, the mining loop feels normal again. Caving, branch mining, and smart routing matter because you are competing on time and risk, not on who can see through stone. That slows early progression in a good way and keeps shops, player markets, and gear ladders from getting blown open by one person vacuuming up the underground.
Good implementations stay mostly invisible. You mine, chunks load, and the world looks right. The only giveaway is sometimes seeing ores appear as you break nearby blocks, which is usually the tradeoff for fairness without heavy restrictions like nerfing mining or gutting ore generation.
It also changes enforcement culture. Since xray itself gets less payoff, staff tend to focus on patterns and rates that do not add up, instead of relying on vibes or demanding everyone record their mining sessions. On a well-run server, that means fewer false accusations and fewer arms-race rules around mining.
Does xray protection stop xray completely?
It shuts down the core advantage: seeing hidden ores through solid blocks. It will not prevent every cheat, but it makes xray far less profitable and easier to catch when someone keeps trying.
Will mining feel weird or look glitchy?
Usually no. The most common quirk is ores popping into view as you open walls, because the server only reveals them once they are legitimately exposed.
Does it cause lag?
On a healthy server, you should not notice. If you do feel stutters during chunk loads or rapid mining, that is typically a tuning or hardware issue, not a guaranteed side effect.
Where does xray protection matter the most?
Anywhere resources convert into power: survival and SMP economies, factions, skyblock mining worlds, and prisons. If ores drive kits, beacons, base defenses, or market prices, it matters.
Are fullbright and shaders allowed with xray protection?
Most servers allow them because they change lighting, not block visibility through solids. Rules usually target tools that reveal hidden blocks or automate mining.
