Launcher
A launcher-based Minecraft server is built around a managed client setup. The intended way to join is through a launcher that installs the exact Minecraft version, mod loader, modpack, and configs the server expects. Instead of manually matching Forge or Fabric builds and chasing dependencies, you install one profile and know you are running what the server will accept.
That enforced baseline changes how the server feels. These servers usually have a defined pack identity: progression, questing, tuned combat, custom worldgen, tech or magic systems, and balance that only makes sense when everyone has the same tools. Once you are in, it is less about troubleshooting and more about actually playing the pack the community is on.
The cost is commitment. First-time setup is heavier than vanilla: bigger downloads, longer initial loads, and a client that wants more RAM and CPU. It is also less drop-in for friends because everyone needs the same profile and has to stay updated. When the server bumps the pack version, you bump with it. That can be a stability win, or it can be friction if you just wanted to hop on for a quick session.
If you prefer curated modded multiplayer where the server experience is designed as a whole, launcher-based is the cleanest way to run it. Think of the launcher as the contract: match the profile, and compatibility problems stop being the main thing between you and the server.
