Pet bats

Pet bats servers turn the bat mob into a persistent companion you can summon, name, and carry across the network. These are not ambient cave spawns. They are tied to your profile, follow your movement, and sit in that sweet spot between vanity and identity without changing the core Minecraft loop.

In practice it is a lobby culture feature. Your bat flutters near your shoulder at spawn, trails you through parkour and portals, and stays visible while you trade, queue, or idle with friends. The best setups keep the pet from stealing your camera space or hovering on the block you are trying to click, so it reads as a flex instead of friction.

Progression usually lives in a pets menu: toggles plus cosmetics like particles, name styles, small size tweaks, color tints, and themed accessories. Ownership tends to be permanent, while variants and effects are the grind, earned through events, crates, ranks, achievements, or a cosmetic shop that gives players something to chase without power-creeping PvP.

Some servers add light utility, mostly in safe zones: return on teleport, sit or perch, simple emotes, or a tighter follow behavior so it does not get lost. Competitive modes and survival worlds often restrict pets entirely to prevent visual clutter, hitbox confusion, and performance issues when too many entities stack in one area.

Are pet bats cosmetic, or do they do anything useful?

Most of the time they are cosmetic. When servers add utility, it is usually quality-of-life behavior like returning after teleports, sitting, or emotes, and it is commonly disabled anywhere PvP clarity matters.

Do pet bats cause lag in crowded spawns?

They can if a server lets hundreds of full entities idle in one place. Well-run networks mitigate this with limits, distance-based hiding, simplified AI, or by disabling pets in peak areas.

Will a pet bat block my clicks or get in my face?

Good implementations avoid that by making the pet non-collidable and by keeping it offset from your crosshair and targeted blocks. If a server does not tune this, pets usually end up restricted to hubs, claims, or specific worlds.

Do I keep my bat after relogging or switching worlds?

Ownership is typically permanent, and you can resummon after relogging. Auto-respawn across world switches varies: hubs often preserve it, while survival and competitive modes may require manual toggling or block pets entirely.

Do I need mods for pet bats?

Usually no. Servers handle it with plugins so a vanilla client works. A resource pack may be offered for cleaner cosmetics, but the basic pet bat behavior is typically available without it.
