protected pets

Protected pets is a multiplayer setup where tamed companions are treated as owned property rather than fragile entities that can be deleted by a griefer, a stray hit, or random chaos. Ownership is enforced consistently, so taking a wolf, cat, horse, or custom companion into shared spaces feels normal instead of risky.

Most implementations lock pet interaction to the owner (and sometimes explicitly trusted players). That usually covers damage, leashing, riding, renaming, and moving the pet through containers or stables. Servers also tend to close off common harassment patterns, like trapping pets to suffocate, pushing them into hazards, or using PvP splash damage to erase someone’s companion.

The result is a different rhythm on busy servers. Players actually travel with horses through hubs, keep stables for style instead of pure safety, and bring companions on resource runs because the penalty for a moment of lag or a crowded fight is not permanent loss. Good setups stay close to vanilla taming while removing the multiplayer-specific ways pets become disposable.

Can other players kill, leash, ride, or rename my pets?

On protected-pet servers, those interactions are typically blocked for non-owners. If the server supports trust or party permissions, you can usually grant access deliberately rather than relying on informal rules.

Are pets protected in PvP?

Often yes. Many servers make pets invalid targets or ignore player-caused damage to pets so PvP is decided by player gear and positioning, not by deleting someone’s companion. Some servers also disable pets in arenas while keeping protection in the overworld.

Does protection stop mob and environmental damage too?

Not always. A common approach is to prevent player-caused harm but keep some natural danger so pets still feel like living mobs. Rules can be stricter in towns and looser in wilderness, depending on the server.

What if my pet gets stuck, lost, or left behind in unloaded chunks?

Many servers provide a recovery method like a recall command, auto-teleport when the pet lags behind, or staff-assisted restoration in clear cases. If recovery tools are limited, protection still helps, but you may need to retrieve the pet manually.

Can I share a pet with friends or a group base?

Some servers support shared access through trusted lists, faction or town permissions, or group ownership. When sharing exists, it is usually explicit to avoid disputes and to keep accountability clear.
